Bob Shiller’s Nobel: Finance IS a Force for Good!

I (Professor Shlomo Maital) was privileged to be asked by the head of Princeton University Press to review and critique Shiller's new book.  I loved the book, because I saw it met a major need -- motivating young people to remain, or enter, finance, at a time when many were migrating out of it.

"Contributions to our understanding of asset pricing...."  Those laconic words don’t begin to do justice to Bob’s contributions.  He was among the few lone voices who warned that America was in a housing bubble, that would soon burst.  He knew this, because he had developed a reliable, accurate measure of housing prices, the Case Shiller Index,  that is widely used.   Earlier he warned that the stock market was in a buble, in his 2000 best-seller Irrational Exuberance (the dot com bubble burst in March 2000).

I encounter many MBA students (some here at EDHEC) who are fascinated by the world of finance, but who are pondering whether to remain in the field, because of the downsizing and layoffs in finance, and because finance was given a bad name after the 2008-12 financial crisis, owing to a handful of scoundrels.  I urge them to remain in finance, and to innovate and reform the industry, and reinvent it.  And I always recommend that they read Shiller’s new book, Finance and the Good Society (Princeotn U. Press, 2012).

Here is how Shiller frames his pitch:
“… finance should not be viewed as inherently or exclusively elitist--separating people into different income groups, or as an engine of economic injustice. Finance, despite its flaws and excesses, is a force that can help us create a better, more prosperous, and yes more equal society.    In fact, finance has been central to the rise of prosperous market democracies and is unimaginable without them.  Beyond headlines incriminating bankers and financiers as self-aggrandizing perpetrators of economic dislocation and suffering, finance remains an essential social institution, necessary for managing the risks that enable society to transform creative impulses into vital products and services, from improved surgical protocols to advanced manufacturing technologies to sophisticated scientific research enterprises to entire public welfare systems.  The connection between Wall Street and Main Street is as fundamental for society as is the connection between the brain and the nervous system in the human body.”

Finance specialists:  Stay the course!  Innovate, create, seek blue oceans.  Finance needs you,  Nobel Laureate Shiller says,  and I strongly agree.

Sheena Strawter-Anthony, also from the class of 2012, was online too, this time from New York. Sheena shared extremely valuable tips on networking with a group of EDHEC Global MBA participants after telling her story of how through face-to-face networking in countless events, coffee chats and phone calls she was able to connect to a rich network of finance professionals and associations. Sharing the international nature of her MBA at EDHEC, Sheena found a wealth of common interest areas with the well-travelled professionals of Wall Street. Through her networking she not only formed a mentorship, but her mentor eventually connected her to her next job in London at Goldman Sachs.

Among Sheena's most valuable tips:
• Networking is about sharing, learning from one another first and foremost, good follow-up and ongoing investment make it effective

• Remember that nothing beats face to face networking and getting on the phone – a lot of the people you want to network with are from generations who prefer this to social media - everyone prefers a personal approach, it really makes a difference!

• Reach out to professional and MBA associations in the place where you want to work, they often provide student discounts to events

• Take a working holiday during your MBA to attend professional association events being held in Europe or elsewhere

Jeremy Briat, from the EDHEC Global MBA class of 2012 was recently online for an EDHEC Global MBA Alumni Spotlight to share his experience at a Top-4 Worldwide Strategy Consulting Firm in London. Jeremy, who made a significant career change, moving from mechanical engineer in the oil and gas sector to Associate Consultant in the UK just after his MBA, gave valuable tips on the key skills, attitudes and requirements of strategy consultants in general. He set the bar high for the top students who may be considering a career in this challenging field. He gave important references for preparing applications, case study interviews (many hours to be spent) and especially helped current MBA participants gain realistic and insightful knowledge about the high-powered, high-impact and highly demanding life of a strategy consultant.

Want to be a consultant? Do you have what it takes to work for one of the big firms? Preparing for life as a consultant can often be as simple as understanding the job and learning how to beat the case interview. It is with this goal that students of the EDHEC MBA have formed the EDHEC consulting club. Jayanth Jayakumar (28, India), the club’s co-founder says“The main objective of the group is to help our members understand the current market trends and give them the much needed practice to ace the case study interviews. Most students aspire to become consultants without understanding the life style and commitment that one has to put forward as a consultant. This club will help them understand all the finer aspects of the job and will also help them prepare.”

The club consists of students from 14 different countries who are all committed to starting a career in consulting, those with previous consulting experience, and those who would like to learn more. The club officially kicked off with and introductory presentation by fellow MBA participant Tetsuya Takigawa (34, Japan), a member of the club who spent the previous eight years working for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Japan. He shared his unique perspective to help member’s gain a united understanding of the industry. Chris Shailos (38, UK/Cyprus) another MBA participant and club member who spent 7 years consulting in Europe with Ernst & Young and Cap Gemini, also added perspective from his experiences.

“It’s great to have members from various experience levels. Where one is weak, another is strong. It is a great mixture of talent and perspective,” says the club’s president and co-founder, Dennison Harris, (35, USA) “We hope to continually meet the goals of our cohorts so that our club can share sustainable growth. This should be a great tool for current and future EDHEC MBA students to reach their occupational goals.”

EDHEC Global MBA participants Jinghua Chen (China) and Kemi Awobiyi (Nigeria), asked Mr. Dolphin about the company’s growth plans for China and Africa respectively. While Mr. Dolphin and his team quoted that they had already initiated their operations in those zones, they also shared with the students the fact that Amadeus is present in 190+ countries worldwide and holds over 25% of the global business. The presentation also shared details on the opportunities and how the culture at Amadeus is built on innovation, professional training and responsibility. With an outplacement background, Gwen Monnot proved to be a valuable mentor as students worked on improving their CVs using peer evaluation and feedback. The coaching sessions concluded with a workshop on Technology Careers. Katerina Iliadis, an expert in IT product marketing, helped the students understand recent industry trends and understand the various opportunities available to them in the technology sector.

“I am happy that this MBA program is also helping me question, understand and develop my character. Unlike most MBA programs where the emphasis is purely on academics, the CareerSMART workshops are proof that the EDHEC MBA helps me achieve holistic growth”, says Mr. Ray Corbett (36, Ireland).

Mr. Nikolay Markhov (32, Russia) says “The coaches brought very valuable practical experience to the coaching sessions and workshops. I found their experience and insights very valuable and helped me gain more knowledge from my coach. Ms. Hasina Ratsaravolana (33, Madagascar) feels that the workshops and coaching helped complete her understanding about herself and her career aspirations. “The clarity that my coach helped me gain has given me new found direction and energy. I now know to prepare a better resume and new methods to approach career opportunities”, says Hasina who is eagerly looking forward to her next CareerSMART coaching sessions.

Sandra Richez, EDHEC Global MBA Career Services Manager, considers this part of the CareerSMART programme to be the most vital resource to EDHEC Global MBA students, “As one of the world’s most diverse and experienced MBA programs, these two days represent the beginning of our highly personalized approach to career guidance. Each student can have up to three individual coaching meetings in the beginning, middle and end of their course. I select our coaches for their international experience and sound knowledge of both personal development and the job market.”

Doing Business in Greater Nice - Roundtable in partnership with Nice Metropole and EDHEC Business School Global MBA

The roundtable discussion revolved around some of the advantages, but also stereotypes and challenges associated with doing business here. Established executives in the region Nicolas Cappelaere, Chairman and CEO of Ineldea Laboratories and Michel Garaudet, CFO of Virbac, one of the world's leading animal pharmaceutical / care products, were on hand to share about their careers and their choice of developing their international businesses from a Nice-headquartered company. They agreed that access to highly skilled talent, great infrastructure and a major international airport all in a relatively close-knit network were some of the important advantages of doing business in the region. Both observed that regulations and administration are an integral part of business life both here and abroad. This trend is likely to be accentuated elsewhere as economies mature across the globe and face increased competition.

EDHEC Global MBA Alumni also shared their points of view. Kris Barcewicz, a Polish graduate who is Operations Program Manager at Nvidia, leading US computer graphics firm with local offices here, explained his appreciation of the region's excellent healthcare, infrastructure and expertise as key factors. Christophe Ancolio, a French alumni and Co-Founder of a successful venture called PlayAdz in the region, focused more on the entrepreneurial culture here, and gave sound advice to those seeking to set up a business - focus on getting your first clients and the rest will come naturally. Bashir Kazour, a Canadian-Lebanese graduate of EDHEC Global MBA is in pre-start up phase of his venture and has recently joined the Nice Metropole incubator. He described some of the hurdles for foreign nationals looking to set up businesses here, while Justin Highman, in charge of Inward Investment Business Development for Nice Metropole reassured that his offices provide personalised support services for investors in the region.

All agreed that beyond business, the Greater Nice Area enjoys some of the greatest weather, sport, outdoor, and cultural activities available - establishing it as Europe's preeminent business sun belt, and a prime location for business creation, research, development or networking. The Metropole Nice Cote d'Azur slogan sums it up rather nicely - "Why choose between business and quality of life" when you can have both!

Choosing your MBA: The 10 DO’s and DON’Ts

$
0
0
1. DO consider the whole package when you choose your MBA. Your MBA is not just a series of back to back classes so DO look at the big picture. Remember that an MBA is usually one programme among many within a school so DO check if the foundation of the school is solid. If the school is well established and has a long history of producing quality graduates, the chances are that it will have a strong reputation among employers and solid corporate relations. DO check the quality and the dynamism of the alumni network.

2. DO use the schools accreditations and rankings to provide an indication of quality. The AMBA accreditation will guarantee that the quality of the MBA programme meets international standards while AACSB and Equis will prove the same for the business school itself. Only 59 schools in the world have this coveted triple crown of excellence so DO consider the added value of a triple accredited MBA in the eyes of a recruiter. DO remember that rankings are just a snapshot of the state of a school at one given time so DON’T use rankings as the sole choice of MBA. Remember it’s not because a school boasts a certain post MBA average salary that you will necessarily get the same. DO use the rankings to check the criteria you feel are important to you and DO check the school’s general evolution over a period of time.

3. DON’T underestimate the importance of research produced by the business school. Research contributes to a school’s international visibility and keeps professors at the leading edge of knowledge in their field.

4. DO ensure that the core curriculum covers your needs once you have established the strength of the school’s foundations. If the school has the AMBA accreditation, you know that the curriculum has been thoroughly audited, together with the quality of faculty to offer high standards. MBA programmes should all offer a blend of business courses such as Strategy, Finance and Marketing etc but DO remember that soft skills such as leadership and managerial competencies are an important part of any MBA curriculum and are dealt with in different ways. DO also check that the specialisations offered match your career goals.

5. While the core curriculum may show similarities in different schools DO check that there is a variety of learning methods. An MBA should not be a sit-back-and-take-notes course but a hands-on, discussion-based learning environment. DO ensure you change work group often and are not stuck in the same small team for the full year. Ensure that you have the opportunity to do group work a variety of fellow participants so DO choose an MBA with an experienced class profile so that you can learn from peers in group work. These same mature classmates will not only enrich your learning environment but provide better networking potential and form a stronger alumni network. In order to check that an MBA will expose you to the learning experience that you aspire to, DO talk to alumni and, if possible, DO visit the school and sit in the class for a couple of hours.

6. DO prefer an MBA whose faculty are not pure academics but ones who also give executive training courses in companies or who come from industry. This ensures a true understanding of what companies are seeking today.

7. DO make sure the careers service is specialised in MBA careers and that it does not just concentrate on first-time jobs for young candidates. A service offering specialised career coaching will of course provide an advantage.

8. As you will be in class most days, DO consider the quality of the campus, both in terms of location (is it really in that city or will it require a long trip on public transport?) and in terms of facilities (is it really a campus or just one classroom in an office block? ). DO make sure there are nearby amenities for the whole family at a price you can afford. If you have to spend a year far from home, the experience has to be as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved.

9. Once you have chosen your MBA and are lucky enough to be accepted, DO NOT be forced into making a hasty decision. An MBA is a big investment and so warning bells should ring if you are offered a seat then told that if you don’t accept within few days you will lose your place or scholarship. DO ask for clarity on scholarships as “You can get a scholarship” might just mean that you are eligible for consideration but without any promise.

10. DO make sure you get all the information before you make your final decision. The DOs and DON’Ts of choosing an MBA are endless and so is the choice of programme. It’s possible that the same highlight you found in one programme actually exists in another, but it’s up to you to ask the right questions. Finally, with a full understanding and good advice in hand, the next steps are yours to make: there is a time when you DO have to take the plunge yourself; but DON’T wait too long or you might get pushed in!

The MBA participants returned from a study trip to South Africa last week, which was undertaken in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch Business School in Capetown. The participants learned first-hand about South Africa ’s business environment and returned to campus with a new understanding of Mandela’s cherished spirit of Ubuntu.

“I think we were unusually privileged to visit the country just before this happened and see the real-world results of the changes Mandela and his counterparts brought about.”
Elizabeth De Hoff, EDHEC Global MBA 2014

This week-long study trip is the fruit of a long-term and valued relationship for EDHEC with USB in Capetown, organized by Johan Burger, who leads USB’s International Programs. The goal of the trip is to give participants an opportunity to understand South Africa’s unique social, economic, political, and business environment, as well as draw important lessons about doing business in emerging markets. Part of the BRICS group of countries Brazil, Russia, India, and China, which are home to many of the MBA participants – South Africa is the largest economy on the African continent, contributing to a quarter of the continent’s GDP.

The trip was composed of classroom-based lectures presented by USB professors and local experts, enhanced by real-case examples in a program of onsite company visits. Participants had the opportunity to gain insight from leading South African executives in firms like SABMiller, Vodaphone, Massmart, Capetown Stadium, and Backsberg winery. It also included time for Global MBA participants to gain a first-hand understanding of local culture and to better understand the social context of living, working and doing business in South Africa.

One of the highlights of the week was the focus on Social Entrepreneurship by Rhoda Kadalie, Executive Director of the Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust and Richard Lord, General Manager of Distell, and formerly Managing Director of Rothesay. These sessions were followed by an on-site visit to Fairhills Fairtrade Project and the Nyanga Township. This was an extraordinary chance for MBAs to see entrepreneurship in action as well as engage and share with local pupils at the Nyanga elementary school.

This was also the opportunity to visit some of the amazing sites Cape Town has to offer, including the emblematic Cape of Good Hope, the World Cup Stadium, and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held in prison and launched his legendary path to freedom with the people of South Africa. The energy of “Ubuntu,” roughly translated “I am because we are,” prevails in South Africa and is a vital part of Mandela’s legacy. In just a short week, it transformed the MBA class, who both embody and embrace the diversity, multiculturalism and the spirit of inter-connectedness that defines South Africa.

In a manner typical of the way courses are taught at EDHEC Business School, this course also had students working on case studies under the mentorship of industry experts.

In a case study about BIC and the launch of their ‘Soleil’ product line, the class took part in group discussions and also had a direct interaction with Mr. Billy Salha from BIC who proactively led the launch of the Soleil series.

Mr. Salha addressed the 73 students in a video conference and helped them understand the various leadership and business lessons he learnt during the launch. He also answered several questions from the students.

The interaction with Mr. Salha and the course have helped me understand more about various situations I will face as a business and people leader. This course will help me make better strategic decisions and innovations in the future”, says participant Ms. Bandana Nayak from India.

This week-long study trip is the fruit of a long-term and valued relationship between EDHEC and USB in Capetown. The goal of the trip is to give participants an opportunity to understand South Africa’s unique social, economic, political, and business environment, as well as draw important lessons on doing business in emerging markets. South Africa is the largest economy on the African continent, contributing to a quarter of the continent’s GDP and is part of the BRICS group of countries Brazil, Russia, India, and China, home to many of the MBA participants. Above all, South Africa is a country where a major political transition occurred over the past two decades thanks to Nelson Mandela. This transition is a source of inspiration for the whole world; as such, it is an invaluable source of learning for MBA students.

The trip, comprising classroom-based lectures by USB professors and local experts was enhanced by real-case examples of corresponding on-site company visits. Full programme.
Participants had the opportunity to gain insight from leading South African executives in firms like SABMiller, Vodafone, Massmart, Capetown Stadium, and Backsberg winery. It also included time for Global MBA participants to gain a first-hand understanding of local culture and to better understand the social context of living, working and doing business in South Africa.

Jane Niji, a South African EDHEC Global MBA participant was particularly enthusiastic about the trip, rediscovering her country from a different perspective.
“Cape Town trip was amazing and what a great experience!  It was an enriching experience that many will live to remember. For me it was interesting to see South Africa from a different perspective, through the eyes of my fellow class mates.  I felt proud of what South Africa had achieved in the last 20 years or so, and  how South Africa was an equal economically in many ways against the developed nations…but at the same time there was a sense that there is so much potential which is not yet realised…”

The trip transformed the MBA class, who both embodies and embraces the diversity, multiculturalism and the spirit of inter-connectedness that defines South Africa.

The event involved company presentations, student and company pitch contests and networking with recruiters and MBA alumni. The current Global MBA participants met the representatives and heads of recruitment of these companies and explored career opportunities. The companies also had their eye out for talent that would fit their professional and cultural requirements.

Six companies pitched their worldwide opportunities to the MBA participants in 30 minute sessions as part of the company pitch contest, with Imerys carrying off the prize.

A student-pitch competition was run in parallel to allow the participants to practice their personal “elevator pitch”. The recruiters gave direct feedback and score based on the pitch's effectiveness including clarity, conciseness, relevance and impact. Mr. Jinghua Chen, Global MBA participant from China won the best pitch award in the student category.

The highlight of the day was an hour long panel discussion on the topic of “Global Workforce” moderated by Sandra Richez, EDHEC Global MBA Career Services Manager and Christophe Dulhoste of HAYS Executive, the event partner.

The corporate executives communicated to the MBA participants their approach to creating a global workforce for their company. Participants also shared their apprehensions and asked questions to understand if the concept itself was a marketing gimmick or a reality. The executives helped the students understand the efforts of the HR function to make the concept a reality and also told that the students should try to identify ways in which they can support the efforts of the HR team. “If you really want it, you will find a way to get it,” said Mr Geoffrey Burns, HR Director CC Global at Capgemini Consulting.
The event closed with a networking cocktail and informal interaction with recruiters and EDHEC alumni who offered guidance to the current participants.
“The event provided us with a priceless networking opportunity,” says Jayanth Jayakumar, a Global MBA participant from India. “We had exclusive access and opportunity to showcase ourselves to the recruiters from major companies. We also got valuable guidance and support from the companies.”

Recruitment Fair

The following day EDHEC Business School's main recruitment fair attracting over 110 firms was held at Espace Champerret in Paris.
